Minimalist Design Doesn’t Have to Be Boring
Share
Design trends come and go, but none are more polarising than minimalism. Some people adore the clean lines and monochromatic colour palette, while some people consider it a bit… boring. In this guide we’ve put together some tips on how minimalist decorating might be more interesting than you think.
Tip #1 – Pick a Base Colour
Many Instagram houses all have the same beige wall and cream carpet, making them appear to be clones of each other. There are many base colour options available beyond beige – gleaming white, light grey, tan, pale green, nude, or taupe are some great base colours. Or eschew paint altogether and go for pine or ash wood. Anything can be a base colour, just make sure it is light enough to keep the room feeling open instead of closed.
Tip #2 – Pick an Accent Colour
Once you’ve settled on a base colour, it is time to create some contrast with an accent colour. There are loads of options, why not try one of the following?
Go for a classic look by pairing white walls with all black furniture
Be bold and vibrant by pairing a neutral wall with a pop of bright green cube storage drawers
Create a calming oasis by using a light wood base with a dark brown room divider
Embrace monochrome by pairing two similar colours; a pale blue base with a deep blue storage box
Tip #3 – Pick some Accent Furniture
You could go all out and buy a lime green sofa… but most people want to keep their furniture in neutral colours. You can bring vibrance into your decorating by using interesting shapes, such as designer table legs.
Tip #4 – Compromise
You spend most of your life in your home, and this can cause arguments when you have a couple with wildly different decorating tastes. If you want to be minimalist, but your partner wants to be maximalist, you can compromise with some cube storage units. A plain unit (without drawers), will stop your room from feeling cluttered, while also showcasing their treasured possessions.
I hope our blog has given you some ideas on how minimalist design doesn’t have to look like you live inside an office. Take some of the tips above and create the living space of your dreams.
